Ode to my childhood home

Disclaimer: Mom and Dad as you are reading this, know that I am so excited for you and your new home. It is beautiful and we are just as excited to come and visit and watch our kids grow and enjoy your new home. :)

Yesterday I packed up the kids and headed to Cedar Rapids for the day. We went to hang out at my parent's house one more time before they move into their new condo on Saturday. I have to tell you, I thought I was okay with it all, but now that it comes down to it I am getting a little sad. This is the only home we lived in while I was growing up. My parents helped to build this house 32/33 years ago (sorry mom and dad, I guess I don't know the exact year, but I know I am 31 and it is older than me!). It sits on one beautiful acre of land. Perfect for playing all sorts of ball games, tag, hide and seek, just about anything a kid could want to do. And in the front yard - the perfect sledding hill. If you went down the same path enough you could pack down the snow enough to make it kind of icy and make it all the way to the ditch - and if you were really lucky - all the way onto the road! (I say this from a child's perspective, not as a parent who would freak out if my children ever rode their sleds out into the street!)

This house has our growth chart at the bottom of the stairs in the basement. Every year on our birthday (and I am sure more often than that), we would insist mom or dad go measure us to see how much we had grown. I had Aidan stand next to it yesterday, but apparently we didn't start this tradition until we were 5 - so Aidan is a little shorter than the lowest line.

This house has my maple tree, which I planted from one of those little helicopter seeds. I don't know how old I was when I planted it, but see, that is my tree on the left. :)

And there is my bedroom window. A bedroom Carrie and I shared. Sometimes not so willingly, but we did have a lot of fun (pac-man flashlight games on the ceiling - love you Carrie!) Oh, and there used to be a different bush there in the front, and once a giant snake (or a bull snake - but it looks enormous to a child!) jumped out at me. Luckily daddy came with a pitchfork and took care of it for me!

I think the saddest part for me right now is that I won't get to watch my kids play in the yard like we used to. I have plenty of memories from growing up in this house, but I had been looking forward to watching my children enjoy it as much as I did.

It truly is a great house and it was a great neighborhood to grow up in. Thank you mom and dad for providing us with this special place to grow.

Aw, that's sweet! I feel exactly the same way about my childhood home. Good memories for sure!
